Pat Contreras, Democratic candidate for Missouri Treasurer, has denounced the Missouri Republican candidates’ support of Donald Trump in the presidential race. If elected, Contreras, a Mexican-American, would be the first Latino statewide official in Missouri’s history.
Contreras issued the following statement:
“Donald Trump’s racism is dividing this country in a dangerous way. His beliefs and proposed policies attack not only Mexican-Americans but Muslims, women, those of other faiths and people with disabilities. It is important, now more than ever, to stand up against a man whose values are completely un-American.
“My fellow candidates in this election do not share this sentiment. Republican party leadership, Sen. Roy Blunt, all four Republican gubernatorial candidates, in addition to Republican candidate for Treasurer Sen. Eric Schmitt, have promised to support Trump in the upcoming election. We do not need more politicians who will say anything to avoid the fray. We need leaders who are not afraid to take a stand.
“Trump’s hateful rhetoric is discriminatory and deplorable. He claims that Mexican immigrants in this country are all criminals. My grandfather is a World War II Veteran. My father was an International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers member in Kansas City. My mother remains one of the hardest workers I know, having juggled multiple jobs when I was a kid to make sure her children could thrive, even working as a civil servant and in law enforcement. I served overseas as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer in Pakistan and Mexico. We have served our country.
“My family’s story is an American story.
“Those that Trump attacks are our nation’s workers, mothers and fathers, and veterans. They are our policeman, teachers, friends and neighbors. Those who support Trump are attacking their own communities with every silent nod of agreement or endorsement — they are attacking America.”
